Two Dora Cakes!

By Ms. Cherryspoon | March 16, 2009

Dora Cake for Jessie.

Dora Cake for Jessie.

A few years back, I met this really cool chick, and she became one of my best friends. While getting some frozen custard at Rita’s one day, she tells that lately she’s been feeling either sick or hungry (hmmm), few months later, I met the cutest little twin babies!

These beautiful babies soon became adorable toddlers who turned 3 this past Friday, and I was delighted to make them individual Dora cakes, one pink and one purple.

My Second Cupcake!

My Second Cupcake!

Pink fuzzy cupcake! Sooo Dr. Seuss!

Upon realizing the lack of the the big swirl tip, as mentioned on my previous cupcake post, I rummaged through my lot of tips looking for cool ones and I found the grass one!  However, this gloomy Sunday, asked for pink frosting, so there you have it!

I’m quite proud about this pic too, I am never taking my pics at night again. Doesn’t even seem that it was taken in the same house as the other cupcake.

OK here we go, what I learned was:

  • How to make White “Wedding Cake” Frosting, which was better tasting than the Buttercream.
  • The Grass Tip is really fun to use.
  • Natural Lighting is much better than the stupid built in flash.

My First Cupcake plus a guest appearance by Gloomy Bear.

This is my first cupcake ever!

This is my first cupcake ever.

This past Monday I decided to tackle cupcakes. I don’t know if you know this about me, but I have a habit of diving head first into things which usually means a lot of adaptation on the fly.

The plan was to make mini cupcakes and decorate every one of them differently. The Reynolds mini cupcake wrappers did not agree with the plan, all of them decided to flop off my mini cupcakes like sad wilted petals staring at you, from that vase you’ve been pretending not to notice should have been emptied for the last two weeks, at least. It might have been the wrong recipe for cupcakes or maybe the wrappers aren’t that great, the fact is in the end I had little (yummy!)  cake nuggets and two full sized cupcakes I had made just for kicks, that saved the day.

Anyways, what I learned was:

  • How to make Chocolate Buttercream Frosting, which was yummy! (But too rich for my taste.)
  • I do not have the appropriate pastry tip for that lovely classic cupcake swirl.
  • I do not have that round tip for that lovely other classic cupcake swirl.
  • Cupcakes are more work than they seem to be.

My first fondant cake. Be Nice. ;)

Inspired by Bakerella’s awesome Valentine’s Candy Cake, I decided to make dear husband something similar but not quite.

Based on the heart shape being slightly girly (I consulted with my go to “guy questions”  friend), red velvet not his favorite type of cake and store bought fondant not to his taste as well, I made many off the cuff changes. The plan then was to make a square shaped candy box, the cake being a Brown Sugar Spice covered in Dark Chocolate Ganache.

I got to test many things while doing this project, the first one was my brand new Williams-Sonoma Rectangular Cake Pan which I have to say is great, the cake was uniform and perfectly baked, the second test was that I had been meaning to try Marshmallow fondant since forever… Which I did! It was great, however, I think it was too elastic for the purpose.
